It was a weekend and I was enjoying my Saturday afternoon with a cup of tea. Mindlessly scrolling through the blue and white screen, I was wondering is there anything better to get done today?
In my mindless mental walk (hah, the irony!) I stumbled upon a meme post that read – “Myntra changed its logo because a woman filed a complaint against it” the highlighted comment on the same post read – “How dirty should your mind be to pick up something like that?”.
“The logo is never going to be the same for me” – I quickly commented and chuckled at it.
By evening, the entire internet population was divided into two warzones. While one represented “for the motion”, the other ones represented “well, this is funny but we don’t care”
Being social media savvy for half a decade now, I had to have an opinion. COME ON!
So like any social media keyboard warrior, I took a deep pause, pressed on “view all comments” and read them one by one. A lot of us has one thing to say though,
“Man! they could have stood by it!”
Some of us yelled in capital letters.
Yep right. Myntra, being an eCommerce brand would have afforded to be made fun of, isn’t it? Because any publicity is publicity after all.
Wrong!
Like any other brand that has got a spine and a mind, Myntra understood that we live in a world where any kind of publicity is not publicity. Especially in an Indian society which is said to be the most tolerant one (you see what I did there?). Being a giant company out there they could not afford to risk the brand name and its reputation.
We are so expressive and vocal about our dislikes about the brands that we ended up uninstalling SNAPCHAT because Amir Khan said something that irked us and he is the brand ambassador of SNAP…DEAL. Yea!
We are so inclined to our beliefs that we halt a movie release on an assumption that something historically degrading is shown in it.
Do you even know, “Ek main hu aur ek tu” – a Kareena Kapoor and Emraan Khan starer was given an A certificate because it had the word “S*X and they did not agree to beep it?”
I mean, I won’t even be surprised if people would end up banning the website JUST because its logo looks offensive, got noticed and they didn’t bother to change it.
In my opinion, Myntra was going to receive a reaction whether it decides to change its brand logo or not. We hear people say they lack spine because they changed it. But, the same brand would have been called “ANTI FEMINIST” – if they wouldn’t have done it.
I feel they did the right thing. As the old saying goes – “It is better to be safer than being sorry!”
